About the Club

Hello dear friend,

Welcome to The Starlit Courier!

This club was started for two reasons.

The first reason is that I have always been slightly obsessed with the idea of receiving mail. I blame Blue's Clues for it. Seeing Joe and Blue do their little dance and sing their little song when they got mail every day made me want to get mail too. Obviously, as a child, I never got any, and it made me really sad. I once asked my mom to write me a letter and send it to me in the mail. Mind you, we lived in the same house. I just thought that it was really exciting to receive a new mystery message in the post.

As I got older, I did start receiving mail, but it wasn’t the fun kind that Joe and Blue would sing about. It was bills, and ads, and a seemingly endless run of credit card applications I never asked for. Still, my love for mail persisted.

Over the years, I would send birthday cards and letters to friends and family across the state, the country, and even the globe. And yes, I could have easily texted them or called them, but there is something so special and almost romantic about putting thoughts and feelings to paper and sending them on their way. A friend of mine once joked that I would have loved sending notes via carrier pigeon. They were right, of course; I would have had a blast with my very own pigeon. But the mail will have to do.

The second reason is that not too long ago, I came across an organization named Letters Against Isolation (not affiliated). On their website, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and other such places can sign up to request letters for their senior residents. The letters go to seniors who may be feeling isolated in their old age, and may not have anyone else to send them correspondence, or even visit them. The letters are meant to bring a small bit of joy and comfort, and to help people feel connected.

As someone who takes letter writing very seriously, I loved everything this stood for. It reminded me of when I was a kid, wishing and hoping someone would write me a letter, just so I had something to open in the mail.  Once I became a volunteer for this organization, I wrote letters that would be sent across the country, delivered to strangers I’ve never met, and would never meet. People with different lives from mine. Of different ages, races, and genders, all of whom I would be able to reach and to whom I would be able to bring a slight bit of happiness with nothing more than a piece of paper, a pen, and a stamp.

And so, the idea for this mail club was born.

This, to me, is a labor of love. It is a way to bring a bit of joy to others, and a little bit of hopeful thinking. It's also a way for me to spend endless hours creating art and writing letters, and I love every second of it.

I hope you stick around, and I hope you enjoy!

Love,

Angelica
